About Radio Caroline Spain:
The Station
Radio Caroline Spain started broadcasting in May 2009 from a land based studio just outside of Benidorm, Spain. The station is independent of Radio Caroline UK but operates with the permission of Peter Moore the station manager at Caroline UK. Caroline Spain broadcasts 24 hours a day, from 9am till 10pm weekdays programming is carried out from the studios in Spain, throughout the night the station acts as a relay for Caroline UK rebroadcasting the signal sent to us via the astra satellite.
Techy Bits
There is currently one studio that is up and running at Caroline Spain thought we are in the process of constructing studio two in order to pre record some shows.
Studio one equipment includes:- Alice 828S broadcast desk, OTS computerised playout system (currently used for music, jingles, adds), Audio-Technica 2050 condenser mic, Tascam DA20 DAT machine, Marantz CDR630 CD recorder, Dual Denon CD players, Sony Minidisk player.
We are currently awaiting delivery on a Alice Soundtech Series A broadcast desk, as soon as this arrives then this desk will replace the current Alice 828S that will be moved to studio two.
The transmitter room is home to a 1kw solid state FM Transmitter that feeds an array of three element vertically polarised antenna that are directed towards Benidorm, there are plans in the next couple of weeks to move the main transmitter to a higher location in order to gain a larger coverage area on 102.7Mhz for Benidorm and the surrounding areas, there is currently black spots due to mountains and FM line of site transmitions not working together. The transmitter room is also home to our Orban Optimod FM processor, D.A. Filter v1.0 and PCS Electronics RDS/Stereo Encoder. There is also a backup 1kw transmitter on stand-by should transmitter one need to be taken offline for maintenance.
There are plans over the next couple of months to have relay transmitters in Alicante and Denya, this will significantly increase the coverage area of Radio Caroline Spain.
The generator room is located just outside of studio one so during a mains power cut that does happen on a regular basis as the studios are in the back of beyond you can hear the generator chugging away, the station currently has a 17.5kva FG Wilson 4 cylinder set made up of a lister peter diesel engine coupled with a 415v 3phase AC Stamford alternator. In the case of an interruption in power from the national grid the generator is automatically fired up by the automatic change over panel and comes online within 30 seconds. The station is also protected by a 10kw UPS that protects both the studio equipment and transmitter, both the UPS and generator combined means there is no interruption in broadcast in the case of any problems with the external supply.
